Microsoft Word is currently the word editor of choice throughout the world because of the widespread use of the word editor in both schools and the workplace. However, many free alternatives exist that are, in fact, easier to use and that contain functions that would make your life easier. One such alternative, called OpenOffice.org Writer, comes with an entire suite of programs that rival Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and many of the Microsoft Office programs themselves. This alternative is free (which is a bargain when compared to Microsoft Office 2008 which starts at $149.95 on Amazon.com and $79.99 when on sale) and contains many features, such as the auto-complete function and easy table and drawing functions, that are desirable to both students and parents alike. However, the largest problem with this program is that it saves word documents as .odt files, which Microsoft Word cannot open. This problem can be easily overcome, however, by following these simple steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • OpenOffice.org Writer
  • File to convert
  • Windows 97/2000/XP/Vista or Mac OS X series or Linux (most types)
  1. Step 1
    Using Ubuntu 8.10 operation system
    Using Ubuntu 8.10 operation system

Create a document in OpenOffice.org Writer (anything from an article to writing "This is a document" will suffice for this example).

  2. Step 2

When you are ready to save the document, click "file" as --you normally would-- but select "Save As..." rather than "Save".

  3. Step 3

Open the drop down menu at the bottom newly opened window to choose the file type.

  4. Step 4

Scroll down and select "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc)" if you intend to open it in a Windows 97, a Windows 2000, or a Windows XP computer. Select "Microsoft Word 95 (.doc)" if you intend to open it in a Windows 95 computer. Select "Microsoft Word 2003 (.xml)" if you intend to open it in a Windows Vista or Windows XP computer with Microsoft Word 2003 or Microsoft Word 2008 (Word 2008 can read both Microsoft Word 2003 and 2008 files).

  5. Step 5

If OpenOffice.org warns you that the file format will be changed, select "Yes" (if it does not let you save the document as a ".xml" file then a ".doc" file will work using Microsoft Word 2003 or 2008).

  6. Step 6

Please ensure that you use a font available in Microsoft Word or you may have to re-arrange the font or reformat it.
